Agenda for Brief Meeting on Nov. 2, 2010

Professor Vasishth kindly scheduled a short meeting in advance of our spring 2011 course MASS50201, Economics of Sustainability.

  1. Introductions, mine and yours
  2. Builds on what worked in BATE: explain. Overview of my approach.
  3. Overview and discussion of MASS50201 syllabus and tentative schedule: Get on the same page. See the original syllabus.
  4. Student remarks and feedback

Discussion With Students

  1. review original syllabus: done literally overnight but was granted full approval, not conditional
  2. proposed book order revision
    1. Include newly re-publication of Our Common Future (reprinted 2010), aka the Brundtland Commission Report
    2. Add as advance reading: Annie Leonard, The Story of Stuff (2010), captures the whole industrial cycle rather than the market moment and/or Tom Friedman, Hot, Flat, and Crowded 2.0, which goes global, stresses energy and the international economy.
    3. Drop Schroyer, Beyond Western Economics: inscrutable and expensive.
    4. Drop Valuing the Earth: (1994) and replace as needed.
    5. Keep Daly and McKibben
  3. grading policy, see syllabus. Grading? What seems to work?
