The Moves: Toward Strategic Sustainability

The Moves: Toward Strategic Sustainability

Build on Polanyi's embedded economy

Not the formal economy of the "productionist metaphysics" of, uh, economic science. Rebuilding starts here.

Polanyi's Double Movement

Basic. The first movement is laissez faire, which derives the response, or second movement, the reaction to laissez faire.

Energize emergent Civil Society

The missing ingredient in the mix of Strategic Sustainability, a basic building block.

Scrutinize industries, not corporations

Each industry can be examined for sustainability, typically from model of industrial ecology, a superior but accepted method from criticism of this corporation or that.

Continue to challenge the prevailing global order

Upset the consensus. Easy to do. Hard to unscramble once scrambled. So, scramble.

Rebuild the global order from below: PanRegionalism, cosmopolitan regionalism, communities, households

This is the essential move toward Strategic Sustainability. Quite consistent with the tradition of Social Ecology.

Let consumers know . . .

and boycott bad actors. This works.
